'A Sorpres
Stone Island
Directed by Glenn Kitson, A Sorpres (By Surprise) explores the deep historical connection between Stone Island and the city of Naples through Resina, a vintage market south of the city where the traders’ passion for the brand has led to an intricate archive as well as a thriving fashion subculture.
Dorcia Studio was tasked with meshing stills and titles to the edit, using meiotic split screens and choppy frame animation to complement the fast cuts of the film. Animated frames of Jesus and Maradona idols are given intensity and urgency, keeping them in lock step with the fast pace of the market.
For titles, the filmic work of Rosi and De Sica were central to bringing the artistic legacy of Naples to this modern depiction of the city’s street culture. Representing the decadence and beauty of Italian Cinema title sequences accentuates the character and luxury Stone Island gives to Naples’ everyday life.
The iconic Stone Island compass logo was re-drawn and animated to bookend the film, mirroring the grunge and toughness of the city that Kitson has presented.
